Decoding the upcoming BS-VI

With the Indian government skipping BS-V to directly implement the BS-VI emission norms in the country by April 2020, the transition will cause some significant changes in the dynamicsof the Indian automotive industry.

Focussing on the urgent need to upgrade the vehicular emission norms in the country, the Supreme Court recently rejected the Central government and the automobile manufacturers’ proposal for an extension of the April 2020 deadline to implement the BS-VI norms so that the latter can clear off the existing stock of non-BS-VI vehicles. The top court directed that only Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) vehicles shall be sold across the country from April 1, 2020. To give a brief idea of what the BS-VI emission norms will entail, for customers and manufacturers alike, here are a few differences between the existing BS-IV and forthcoming BS-VI norms.
Firstly, permitted levels of sulphur in the fuel will differ for both. While the BS-IV fuels contain 50 parts per million (ppm) sulphur, the BS-VI compliant fuels will have to cap the sulphur content at 10ppm. Also, under the BS-VI norms, Nitrogen Oxide levels generated by diesel combustion will have to be brought down by nearly 70 per cent whereas, for petrol vehicles, they can be reduced by 25 per cent. Another polluting evil which is currently plaguing the nation -  particulate matter like PM2.5 and PM10
Firstly, domestic manufacturers will have to re-develop their existing powertrains in order to make them BS-VI compliant. To put things into perspective, it takes years for brands to come up with a new engine concept, from its inception to testing to the final production-spec version. International vehicle brands currently operating in India will have an easier time in this regard as they already have Euro-6 compliant engines and powertrains in their international portfolios. They will simply have to source them to India and plonk them into the vehicles.
As Indian car buyers are still pretty upbeat about diesel options, carmakers will face the added challenge of incorporating the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) on their diesel offerings, which is a crucial change as per the BS-VI norms for reducing the Nitrous Oxide emissions from diesel vehicles. DEF, which is stored in a dedicated storage tank fitted in the vehicle, is injected into the exhaust pipe which then interacts with the Nitrogen Oxide coming from the engine to convert it into harmless nitrogen and steam, before leaving the exhaust pipe. According to studies done by the World Health Association, Nitrogen Oxide emissions are known to aggravate asthma.
AdBlue fluid on BS-VI diesel vehicles
As a result of these rather significant changes and upgrades, production costs are bound to go up in the coming future and the brunt of all this will ultimately be borne by the customers. Not only will the prices of diesel cars go up significantly across all segments, but the incorporation of the DEF setup, which will require additional space, is most likely to eat up some interior space, especially on small cars. Details about the final incorporation and placement of the DEF tank on Indian cars are yet to surface. While the increased costs may be insignificant for luxury car buyers, the average Indian car buyer will certainly feel the pinch.
To sum up, with the upcoming changes in emission norms, the dynamics of the entire automotive industry in India are bound to witness some hefty changes, especially in terms of the demand for small diesel cars. Everything ranging from buying trends to the average spending pattern to the prices will also witness some changes since India is a price-sensitive market.

Audi sales chief outlines how digitalization is changing the rules of the game

Audi has fallen back into third place in global premium car sales behind Mercedes-Benz and BMW, in part due to the automaker's model cycles. With key arrivals such as the new A4 now available, Audi expects a boost. Audi sales boss Dietmar Voggenreiter said, however, that today's success in the automotive industry is measured by a lot more than volume. He explained why in an interview with Automotive News Europe Correspondent Christiaan Hetzner.

You were in charge of strategy at Audi when it set its target to sell 1.5 million cars by 2015. After selling 1.8 million vehicles last year what is the next goal on the way to 2 million in 2020?
The industry's business model hadn't changed at that time, so the most common goal was to drive volume by expanding into new markets and segments. Of course, increasing global sales remains an important parameter for success and we are heading toward 2 million units by 2020, but we need additional KPIs [key performance indicators] to showcase our broader mobility approach. Pure volume figures don't convey the growth of on-demand mobility services or possible revenue from the sale of anonymized data generated using the swarm intelligence from our cars. These developments are highly complex, so it's currently difficult to quantify them financially.

How is this changing marketing?
Roughly two-thirds of our advertising for the Q2 crossover is digital rather than classic channels such as print and TV. The advantage of social media is that it provides immediate feedback. We can see through the number of views and likes how consumers are reacting to our spots. Right now we have two in the top 10 charts for most shared ads including our T-Rex ad for piloted driving. The challenge is to offer creative and captivating stories. You can't reach people with traditional sales-driven ads through digital distribution channels. They get bored quickly and click away.

And how is it changing auto retail?
We are already the leader in digital showroom concepts and we intend to expand that. Take for example the rollout of nearly 200 Customer Private Lounges worldwide by the end of this year. Here buyers can configure their cars entirely to their tastes. They can compare various interiors or inspect their rims up close -- all in high definition on a large screen or, soon, with virtual reality headsets. This leads to a measurable increase in revenue per car sold at our participating dealers. Customers order more options or assistance systems when they can experience them virtually as opposed to simply reading about them somewhere in a brochure at home. Audi dealerships that have already been equipped with digital modules have seen spending for optional extras increase by 15 percent on average.

How did your nine years running Audi's business in China help you?
All three global megatrends that are changing the way we advertise, market and sell cars - whether its sustainability, urbanization or digitalization - are found at their most extreme in China. The largest market for electric cars will be China. The average Chinese consumer spends almost 4 hours on his smartphone every day, for example, and mobile payments are second nature to them, so China was a super school for me.

Premium brands such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW have started car-sharing schemes, what about Audi?
We have always said that we are not going into public car-sharing. Walking 500 meters to a car you booked only to find the previous occupant left it a mess is just not a premium experience. Our answer is selected stationary formats we are gradually rolling out worldwide. Just recently we started "Audi at home" in Hong Kong. We teamed up with a real estate developer to offer cars on demand at his building complex because he has twice as many luxury apartments as parking places. Our well-established dealer network with 3,000 sales points worldwide is very important when it comes to scaling and enlarging our mobility services. I am convinced that this is a huge advantage over Google or Uber.

What about electric cars, does Tesla have too great a lead already?
We've had long discussions within Audi about when might be the best time to move into electromobility. In the past, we felt the market conditions were not supportive enough yet. That will change both in terms of electric range and charging infrastructure in the coming years. We are convinced that we got the timing exactly right as we will enter the market with our first full-electric vehicle, the Audi e-tron, in 2018.

What is the future for the diesel?
We are constantly looking at diesel penetration rates in our orders. They are stable. Some fluctuations are related to the product cycles of important models, some a result of lower oil prices, but overall the change is minimal. We're talking a tenth of a percentage point worldwide. Customers continue to love the torque and the fuel economy of a diesel. We don't see any measurable effect from the diesel issue on customer demand for that technology.

Strange psychiatric disorders

Mental disorders have always been looked at with bias, ignorance as well as fear in our society. People are labelled as being crazy and this is mainly because of the biased and uninformed view towards mental disorders. Now let's get a closer look at the so-called crazy mental disorders as well as the worst mental disorders that people suffer from..

Most families are not prepared to cope with
learning their loved one has a mental illness. It
can be physically and emotionally trying, and can make us feel vulnerable to the opinions and judgments of others.
If you think you or someone you know may have a mental or emotional problem, it is important to remember there is hope and help.

We’ve all heard of the most famous psychological disorders :-

schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder,
and so on.

But there are many disorders that most people
haven’t heard of ― some of which are rather bizarre, to say the least. We’ve already seen a couple of lists on mental disorders, which you can read here and here :-
________________________________________________
● Landau-Kleffner Syndrome - Language Disorder

Landau-Kleffner Syndrome is an odd disorder; children who suffer from it frequently lose the ability to properly express and understand language . Some people with this syndrome also suffer from seizures, and scientists are
yet to understand why the disorder occurs.
It’s all made stranger by the fact that the children usually develop their language skills just fine, and then seem to lose them randomly. Certain speech therapies can be helpful in managing the condition, but it is fairly difficult to treat.
This disorder affects children between 5-7 years old. It is really a crazy mental disorder because kids who had well developed language skills suddenly lose the ability to understand language or express themselves. The loss of language may be because the part of the
brain which controls speech and comprehension is affected. It is difficult to treat, although speech therapy can be of some help. Some children who suffer from this condition also suffer from seizures,
rage, anxiety and impaired short-term memory.

● Aboulomania - Indecision

Aboulomania isn’t a very well-known disorder; essentially, it involves the occasional onset of crippling indecision. Aboulomania sufferers are normal in practically every other way, physically and mentally—they simply run into very serious problems whenever they’re faced with certain choices, to the extent that they struggle to regain normal function. Some aboulomania sufferers face incredible difficulties in everyday life, finding it nearly impossible to do simple things; even wondering whether or not they should go out for a walk can paralyze them with indecision. Many sufferers report that their incapacity to do what they want comes in spite of that fact that they’re aware of being physically fine—and so they seem to be imprisoned by the inability to fulfill their own will.
This particular is not a very well-known crazy mental disorder. In this condition, the person is unable to function properly when he or she have to make choices. Even a basic decision of going out for a walk becomes difficult for them.
The indecision is so severe that it becomes difficult for them to regain normal functioning. They may experience anxiety, depression, stress and mental anguish. People can become socially reclusive.

● Caffeine-Induced Anxiety Disorder

Caffeine can induce serious anxiety, and a good portion of the world is high on caffeine at any given time—which means there is a good chance that many people are suffering from this right now. While researchers have long acknowledged that caffeine increases the chances of anxiety, they have additionally found that people who already have a regular anxiety disorder are far more susceptible to the psychological effects of caffeine. So if you’re already prone to panic attacks, ingesting caffeine could well lead to an even greater risk.

● Boanthropy

Boanthropy is a strange delusional disorder whereby a person believes himself to be a cow or an ox. Some people think that the disorder usually starts out as a dream and goes on to pervade the waking mind, eventually taking hold as a full-blown delusion. It’s also possible that the condition can be induced by hypnotism, provided that the subject is more than a little suggestible. Nebuchadnezzar, King of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, is generally thought to have suffered from this condition—at least according to the Book of Daniel, which states that he “was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen.”
________________________________________________
● Autophagia Self-Mutilation

This one will definitely be labelled as one of the crazy mental disorders and can be life-threatening because a person with this condition tends to eat parts of his own body compulsively! It is type of impulse control disorder and can start off with biting nails and end up with mutilated fingers or other body part.
The person is excited or aroused before committing the act and derives pleasure, relief or gratification when doing this. And afterwards, they will not feel guilt or regret.
You might want to put your food away for this one. Autophagia refers to the condition of eating yourself, or parts of yourself—often by simply biting and chewing impulsively. This disorder doesn’t have an official place of its own in the DSM-IV, but it would fit in with impulse control disorders in general. One man apparently began by merely biting his own nails—but ended up with such a problem that he severely mutilated his fingers. As with most disorders, this one can range from very mild to life threatening.

● Alien Hand Syndrome - Rebellious Arm

This is a very frustrating mental disorder for the person suffering from it. The person lack control on the arm. It acts on its own – moving around, picks up things, responds to other person’s touch. It can cause a lot of distress to the victim and the hand is often referred to as a separate entity from the body.
This condition can be caused after brain surgery to correct epilepsy. It can also be seen after a stroke, tumor, aneurysm or infection and Alzheimer’s disease.

Alien hand syndrome sounds really cool, but it is hard to imagine it being anything but extremely frustrating for the person experiencing it. Basically, it occurs when an arm seems to have a mind of its own; it moves around, grabs hold of things, and responds to to the touch of another person—but it does this without the control of the person to whom it belongs. As you’d expect, this nightmare syndrome can lead to great distress on the part of the sufferers, who often refer to their rogue arm as though it were a separate entity.

● Taijin Kyofusho

This phenomenon is most widespread in Japan, or more specifically, among those who grew up according to the customs and social expectations of Japanese culture. Taijin Kyofusho is characterized by a crippling fear of social interactions, and a vivid awareness of everything that could possibly go wrong, such as having an offensive body odor or doing something that will offend someone in any other way. That the condition should arise in Japan is in many ways unsurprising, since Japanese culture is well known for placing importance on keeping up appearances and etiquette in social situations.

● Erotomania - Paranoid Crush

Erotomania is a pretty strange disorder; essentially, it refers to people who are deluded into thinking that someone else is in love with them. But what makes this disorder especially bizarre is that the person who is supposedly in love with the sufferer is usually someone of much higher status than themselves—and often a celebrity. This delusion can be difficult to break; even if the supposed lover directly denies any feelings of love, it is often not enough to convince the deluded individual. Unfortunately, there isn’t much known about this particular disorder, especially in regard to its treatment.
Among all crazy mental disorders, this one makes its victims believe that someone is in love with him or her. And usually this someone is of a higher status, like a celebrity. It is difficult to break this belief, even when the supposed person denies being in love. They might even believe there are several secret admirers and have delusion of reference as well.
This condition is usually seen in people who suffer from other mental conditions like bipolar mania, schizophrenia, psychosis and delusional disorder.
________________________________________________
● Riley-Day Syndrome

Riley-Day Syndrome is also known as Familial Dysautonomia; and it’s a disorder that is genetically inherited. To actually show signs of having the condition, however, the relevant gene has to be passed on by both parents. Basically, Riley-Day syndrome affects the autonomous nervous system. While there are many extremely unpleasant symptoms (such as frequent vomiting, and difficulty swallowing), it does also have some arguably cool features. Chief among these is the fact that many people with the condition are almost entirely insensitive to pain. Of course, though a painless life sounds great in theory, it doesn’t work so well in practice. Pain is actually your friend; it sends signals to your brain to let you know when something needs fixing—so to go without it altogether isn’t necessarily going to be a pleasant experience.
________________________________________________
● Stendhal Syndrome—Beauty Shock

In this particular condition, people are unable to handle exposure to too much beautiful art in a short span of time. This syndrome is common amongst tourists when they visit breathtaking cultural or artistic places or see famous work of art. In face of these things, they will undergo dizziness, increased heartbeat, confusion, disorientation and hallucinations.
________________________________________________
● Stockholm Syndrome—Love for My Captor

In this condition, the victim ends up feeling sorry for the kidnapper and gets attached to them and voluntarily complies. It usually happens in cases of kidnapping, but is also seen in cases of child abuse, rape and wife-beating.
The condition is said to happen when the two individuals are tied in a strong emotional bond as a result of being harassed, abused and intimidated. It could also be the reaction of trauma and identifying with the aggressor.
________________________________________________
● Antisocial Personality Disorder—Apathy, Hatred and Cold-Bloodedness

Among all crazy mental disorders, this one is so known because many TV series include stories about it. So we know it's really dangerous and is also referred to as psychopathy or sociopathy. They lack empathy, which leads them to have no morals or emotions. Besides, they may have behaviors, like deception, lying, impulsiveness, irritability, aggression, unconcern for feelings of others, lack of remorse and disregard for safety.
________________________________________________
● Alice In Wonderland Syndrome

Painful migraines and misconceptions about the world around you. That is life for a sufferer of AIWS. Sufferers are prone to hearing sounds larger and smaller than they actually are. Objects look larger and smaller than they actually are as well. It could be a land of enchantment if there wasn’t so much pain wrapped around it.
Furthering the connection to the book, AIWS has similarities to an LSD trip, but without the euphoric feelings. That may be because the syndrome has links to those that use psychoactive drugs, but it can stem from tumors as well. Thankfully, this problem tends to only impact people into their 20s.
_______________________________________________
● Pica

This eating disorder is sometimes linked to Kluver-Bucy Syndrome for their needs to eat non-food substances. This includes grass, dirt, pins and other items found in everyday life. Once a stomach of a Pica sufferer is examined, it can be mind blowing to see what is left in there after years of self-abuse.

Pica does have some detractors, people who believe that it isn’t an illness. Some have raised the issue that it is a mineral deficiency in the subject. Others believe it to be an illness, but cultural in origin. Regardless, a life of compulsions to eat strange objects is scary enough. No matter how it gets labeled.

Mercedes Benz - GLS 350D - The S Class of SUV.....

Mercedes-Benz is on a renaming spree. It now follows the same nomenclature for its SUVs as it uses in the hierarchy of its sedans – you start with the GLA, and go up the order to GLC, GLE and the biggest – GLS. While India is familiar with the rest, the GLC will come in next month. But what we have here is essentially the updated GL-Class with one extra alphabet in its name.
To align the GLS, visually, with the rest of the Mercedes SUVs, it gets some subtle changes at the front and the back. The headlamp design has been changed and there’s a new grille. The lower half of the front bumper, too, gets some changes and brushed aluminium has been used generously.
The wheel design sees some changes as well, as do the tail-lamps – they’re more modern and funky. Apart from the GLS badge that sits on the tailgate, there’s also a 350d sticker, doing away with the earlier CDI nomenclature.
There are a few changes on the inside, too. For starters, there’s an updated COMAND system with a touchpad and a rotor – like the one we’ve seen in the C, S and a few other recently-updated Mercs – which makes life much simpler in terms of navigation, multimedia needs and Bluetooth telephony.
Mercedes now also offers two interior trims – ash wood and brushed aluminium, and there is a wider variety of body paint options, too. The GLS, probably, has the biggest cabin amongst all SUVs out there, with the third row spacious and comfortable enough even for a six-footer.
Mechanically, not much changes and it continues to be powered by a V6 oil-burner. It churns out 620Nm of spin right from 1,600 revs. It’s a tested engine, one we’ve seen in the previous ML- and the current E- and S-Class. It’s quiet, with clatter barely audible inside. It offers linear power delivery, though it isn’t the most free-revving diesel motor we’ve seen, and maxes out at 4,200rpm.
Like other modern Mercs, this one, too, gets a nine-speed automatic gearbox. The extra ratios provide flexibility and boost fuel efficiency. It’s decently quick considering its size – it does the 0-100kph drill in 7.8 seconds and tops out at 222kph.
The GLS is much easier to drive than the GL. The steering is extremely light, but predictive in the normal mode, and a turn of a knob that sits on the centre console makes it heavier. The 4Matic system sends power to all four wheels, which boosts traction levels. In terms of handling, it’ll stick to its line, but with its height and weight, expect major body roll. The ride is good, as you’d expect.
Overall, this update will help the GLS stay in the game. It has a luxurious cabin, drives well and can even do a bit of off-roading. At Rs  84.14 lakh, (ex-showroom, Kolkata), there aren’t many SUVs that can offer the mix of qualities the GLS does.
Specs
2987cc, V6, turbo diesel, 255bhp, 620Nm, 9G Tronic, AWD; 0-100kph: 7.8s,  Top speed: 222kph,  Price: Rs 84.14 lakh (ex-showroom, Kolkata).
Verdict
Big, capable SUV that’s got presence and nice driving dynamics
